SAFE: Cyprus' Defence Plan Approved – “We are Strengthening Security Where it Matters Most,” Says Defence Minister

The EU Council approved a package of implementing decisions making financial assistance available under SAFE to eight EU member states, including Cyprus. Cyprus will receive loans of €1,181,503,924 to strengthen its defence production, with initial funding of €177,225,588.60. This approval is part of a broader EU effort to strengthen defence and security. The decision follows the positive assessment of the Member States' National Investment Plans in Defence. It allows countries to acquire modern defence equipment and enhance their defence readiness. The Cypriot Minister of Defence, Vasilis Palmas, stated that the EU “is strengthening our security where it matters most.” In addition, the Council approved an agreement with Canada, allowing Canadian companies to participate in public procurement within the SAFE framework. Canada is the first non-European country to participate in the SAFE instrument. The agreement is expected to be formally completed after the approval of the European Parliament. The funding will be made available to Member States through loan agreements and will be used to acquire defence equipment and enhance their defence capabilities. The approval of SAFE is a significant step towards strengthening European defence and addressing modern threats.
