SAFE: National Defence Plans of 8 EU Member States Approved, Cyprus to Receive €1.18 Billion

The European Commission has approved the national defence plans of eight EU member states, including Cyprus, under the SAFE (Security Action for Europe) initiative. Cyprus will receive €1.18 billion to strengthen its military readiness and acquire modern defence equipment. In total, the eight member states will have access to approximately €38 billion. This initiative is part of the broader Readiness 2030 package, which aims to mobilize up to €800 billion for defence across the EU, with €150 billion earmarked for joint procurement. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen highlighted the significant progress the EU is making in the field of defence, while Defence Commissioner Andrus Kumpilius stressed the need for immediate action. The next steps include approval of the plans by the EU Council and the signing of loan agreements, with the first payments expected in March 2026.
