Russia Allegedly Planned Fake Assassination Attempt on Hungarian PM Orbán

According to a Washington Post report, Russia's foreign intelligence service (SVR) planned a staged assassination attempt against Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán with the aim of boosting his election campaign. The plan, codenamed “Gamechanger,” aimed to shift the election narrative from economic hardship and Orbán's declining popularity to security issues. This plan bears similarities to the attempt on Donald Trump in Pennsylvania. According to the SVR document, a staged attack could “fundamentally change the entire narrative of the election campaign” for Orbán. Moscow considers the Hungarian election highly significant as it affects its influence in NATO and the European Union, with Orbán being Putin's closest European ally. Alongside the assassination plan, Russia allegedly conducted other influence operations to re-elect Orbán, using companies like Social Design Agency, funded by Moscow, which promoted Orbán as a leader defending national sovereignty. His opponent, Péter Magyar, was portrayed as a “puppet of Brussels.” According to the document, the majority of Hungarian citizens (52.3%) are dissatisfied with the situation in the country, even in rural areas where the ruling party traditionally has strong influence.
