Rising Vaping Use Among Young People

Vaping use is increasing alarmingly among young people, presenting a false image of a harmless habit through flavors and colors. However, e-cigarettes contain nicotine, which is highly addictive and negatively affects adolescent brain development, impacting memory, concentration, and behavioral control. Furthermore, the vapor contains harmful chemicals and particulate matter that cause respiratory and cardiovascular problems, and passive exposure, especially in school environments, is also dangerous. The worrying trend is that vaping often acts as a 'gateway' to conventional smoking, increasing the likelihood of young people turning to cigarettes later. This debunks the perception of vaping as an alternative solution, proving it can be the beginning of a long-term addiction. Misinformation about the safety of vaping contributes to its increased use. The Ministry of Education, Sports and Youth has issued a new circular, reminding of the strict ban on smoking and vaping in all areas of educational institutions, without exception. The circular applies to students, teachers, staff, visitors and any other person within the school premises. Teachers who violate the ban may face monetary and administrative penalties, while principals/headteachers are responsible for violations occurring in their area, unless they prove they have taken all necessary preventive measures. The Ministry emphasizes the negative impact of nicotine on adolescent brain development and reiterates that vaping is not harmless.
