Renowned Cypriot Chef Andreas Mavrommatis Passes Away

Renowned Cypriot chef Andreas Mavrommatis has passed away, leaving behind a significant legacy in the culinary world. He was the first Cypriot to be awarded a Michelin star, recognizing his innovative approach to Cypriot and Greek cuisine. He began his career in Paris, where he studied cooking and created a successful chain of restaurants and delicatessen stores under the name Maison Mavrommátis. Born into a farming family in Cyprus, Mavrommatis immigrated to Paris in 1977 to study, but quickly discovered his passion for cooking. Together with his brothers, he created a business that started as a small grocery store and evolved into a thriving gastronomic empire. His chain today includes restaurants and stores in Paris, Nice, Marseille and Cyprus. Mavrommatis' restaurants are renowned for reviving traditional Cypriot and Greek cuisine with a modern approach, using French techniques and ingredients. They have hosted prominent figures from the political and artistic world. In addition, the company produces and distributes Greek products under the brand name “Thessalia” in the French market. The success of Andreas Mavrommatis is evidenced by the fact that his business sells huge quantities of traditional Greek products daily, such as 150 kilograms of taramasalata. The recognition with a Michelin star in 2018 sealed his long and successful career, while his contribution to the promotion of Greek gastronomy abroad was invaluable.
