Reddit Fined €16 Million – Fails to Verify Identity of Underage Users

Reddit is facing a fine of over €16 million from authorities after it was found that it lacks adequate mechanisms to verify the age of users, resulting in the collection of data from minors without their consent. This is the largest fine ever imposed for issues of children's privacy protection. The investigation revealed that Reddit did not implement robust age verification mechanisms, making it illegal to process the personal data of children under 13. Furthermore, it failed to conduct a Data Protection Impact Assessment (DPIA) before January 2025. The UK Information Commissioner, John Edwards, expressed concern over the inability of a company the size of Reddit to protect children's data. He emphasized that the personal information of minors was collected and used without their understanding, consent, or control, exposing them to inappropriate content. Reddit has announced that it intends to appeal the decision, but the Information Commissioner stressed that companies operating online services accessible to children have a responsibility to protect them, ensuring they are not exposed to risks through the exploitation of their data. The Commission continues to review the age verification checks implemented by the platform.
