Record Levels of African Dust Recorded Over Cyprus

The Eratosthenes Centre has recorded record levels of African dust over Cyprus, with the phenomenon expected to peak tonight in Limassol. This is the first significant dust event from the Sahara for 2026, occurring in the lower atmosphere up to 2 km above ground. Concentrations exceed 2000 μgr/m^3 with visibility below 2 km at 1 km altitude. Levels are expected to reach 500 μgr/m^3 near the ground, ten times the air quality limits. The dust will gradually subside on Thursday morning but will reappear in the evening. The event is accompanied by rainfall, which will contribute to the settling of dust on the ground and its removal from the atmosphere. The Eratosthenes Centre continues to monitor the situation and will keep the public informed.
