Record Greenhouse Gas Levels in Cyprus, Commissioner Warns

Environmental Commissioner Antonia Theodosiou reported that greenhouse gas concentrations in Cyprus have reached record highs, according to scientific data from the Cyprus Institute. The main emission sectors are electricity generation and transport. Despite this worrying picture, a 5.2% reduction in emissions was recorded according to Eurostat, indicating progress but not enough for complacency. The Commissioner stressed the need to strengthen efforts to transition to a sustainable energy model. Furthermore, she highlighted the criticality of the water issue and increasing desertification, emphasizing the need for an integrated approach to natural resource management. The protection of the Troodos Geopark, an internationally recognized natural treasure, is also a priority.
