Raouna at LIBE: Success will be judged not only by closed files, but by trust

The Deputy Minister for European Affairs, Marilena Raouna, during the briefing of the European Parliament's Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs (LIBE), emphasized that the success of the Cypriot Presidency will not be judged solely by the completion of files, but primarily by the trust that will be built between European institutions, member states and citizens. Ms. Raouna highlighted the importance of the European Union as a Union of values and the rule of law, especially in light of recent geopolitical challenges. She noted that LIBE is a crucial space where security meets freedom and citizens' rights, and that European action must remain legitimate and accountable. Ms. Raouna also referred to the strong symbolism of her presence at the special session for the International Day of Remembrance of the Holocaust, reminding the importance of safeguarding democracy and the rule of law. She stressed that the rule of law is fundamental not only for the political functioning of the EU, but also for its economic prosperity, as the single market cannot function without respect for the law and fair competition. At the same time, Ms. Raouna warned of the increasing threats facing European democracies, such as foreign interference, cyberattacks and hybrid operations. She emphasized the need to remain steadfast in European values in the current geopolitical and economic environment. Finally, Ms. Raouna stressed the particular symbolic and political significance of the Cypriot Presidency, given that Cyprus is the only EU member state that remains divided and under military occupation, highlighting the need for peace and stability.
