Raouna at LIBE: Success will be judged by trust built, not just files closed

The Minister of European Affairs, Marilena Raouna, during her briefing to the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs (LIBE) of the European Parliament, emphasized that the success of the Cypriot Presidency will be judged not only by the completion of files, but primarily by the trust that will be built between institutions, member states and citizens. She highlighted the importance of the European Union as a Union of values and the rule of law, especially in light of recent geopolitical and institutional challenges. Ms. Raouna stated that LIBE is the place where security meets freedom and politics meet citizens' rights, and that its work contributes to ensuring that European action is legitimate and accountable. She pointed out that the rule of law is fundamental to the economic functioning of the EU, as the single market cannot function without it. At the same time, she warned of the increasing pressures on European democracies from foreign interference, cyberattacks and hybrid operations, which aim to undermine trust in institutions and social cohesion. She stressed the need to maintain a firm stance on European values. Ms. Raouna particularly emphasized the symbolic importance of the Cypriot Presidency, reminding that Cyprus is the only EU member state that remains divided and under military occupation, making its Presidency particularly significant.
