Prison Staff Union Welcomes Announcement of New Prisons and Staffing

The Prison Staff Branch of PASYDY welcomes the announcements by the Minister of Justice, Kostas Fytiris, regarding the construction of new prisons outside cities and the strengthening of the Department of Prisons staff with the recruitment of Prison Officers. They consider these measures a response to long-standing demands and a significant step towards improving the correctional system. However, they emphasize that the current understaffing and exhausting working conditions do not allow for further delays. They call for the establishment of clear implementation timelines, the immediate promotion of recruitment, and the meaningful participation of staff in decision-making. The Branch declares its willingness to cooperate in the modernization of the correctional system, but warns that it will dynamically pursue the rights of staff if commitments are not met.
