Priorities for Cypriot Agriculture during the EU Presidency

Cyprus assumes the Presidency of the Council of the EU with the aim of strengthening the primary sector and promoting an autonomous and open European Union. The Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, Maria Panagiotou, presented the Presidency's priorities, focusing on four key areas: a strong and sustainable Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), ensuring fair income for farmers, strengthening their position in the supply chain, and securing additional funding for the sector. Furthermore, the Presidency emphasizes protecting the agricultural sector from the effects of climate change and drought, with immediate prevention and response measures to natural disasters and promoting water resilience. Recognizing Cyprus's specificities, the Presidency will work to adapt European policies to local needs. A significant issue for Cypriot farmers is the EU-Mercosur trade agreement and the fear of unfair competition from third-country products. The Cypriot Presidency is committed to seeking protective clauses and equal competitive conditions to ensure that Cypriot producers are not disadvantaged. Finally, the Presidency recognizes the need to renew generations in the countryside and will promote targeted investment in innovation and new skills, as well as creating conditions that will make the countryside attractive for work and permanent residence, offering a fair standard of living. Cyprus aspires to make agriculture a driving force of its economy.
