President of Larnaaca WDD: "Water Savings Through Citizen Cooperation"

The President of the Larnaaca Water Development Corporation (WDC), Angelos Chatzicharalambous, expressed confidence that water savings can be achieved through citizen cooperation and specific measures, thus avoiding water cuts this summer. However, he acknowledged a delay in planning by the Water Development Department, requiring immediate and effective water resource management. During a meeting at the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, measures to address water scarcity were announced. Mr. Chatzicharalambous emphasized the need for collective effort, including strengthening teams to detect and repair leaks, replacing supplies in problematic areas, and temporarily suspending water supply to parks and green spaces. Furthermore, the Larnaaca WDC will collaborate with the Water Development Department to distribute nozzles to consumers, aiming to reduce water consumption. Simultaneously, awareness campaigns will be implemented in partnership with the Ministry of Agriculture to promote a culture of rational water use and prevent waste. Regarding water allocations to WDCs in 2026, a reduction of approximately 10% is expected compared to 2025. However, Larnaaca has already taken steps to reduce its water needs. Mr. Chatzicharalambous expressed optimism that with citizen cooperation, a 10% saving can be achieved in the province, avoiding water cuts. Particular concern was raised regarding the water scarcity problem facing the primary sector, namely agriculture.
