President of Cyprus: EU Presidency is a National Mission

The President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, emphasized that the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the European Union is a national mission and priority. He noted that Cyprus's accession to the EU is the most important development in the country's history since 1960 and that the government has been systematically preparing for this Presidency for the past two years. President Christodoulides highlighted the advantages of Cyprus as a small member state, such as the ease of setting aside national agendas and the ability to act as an honest mediator. He also mentioned Cyprus's geographical location close to the Middle East and its experience as a state under occupation, which allows it to better understand the situation in Ukraine. Finally, he stressed that Cyprus has moved beyond being a country with 'one issue' and can contribute to a wider range of issues within the EU.
