President of Cyprus Discusses New EU Multiannual Financial Framework with European Court of Auditors

The President of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, met with the President and Member of the European Court of Auditors, Tony Murphy and Lefteris Christoforou, to discuss the new EU Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF). President Christodoulides described the MFF as a significant challenge but expressed optimism for reaching consensus by the end of the year, in collaboration with the European Council and the European Commission. He emphasized the need for the new framework to respond to modern challenges and reminded that Cyprus has received over €4 billion from the EU for projects benefiting its citizens. Special reference was made to the Common Agricultural Policy, where the President highlighted the need for balance. Tony Murphy characterized the discussion as very productive, covering important issues regarding Cyprus's participation in the EU. He focused on the absorption of funds from the Recovery and Resilience Facility, where Cyprus is performing above the European average, having absorbed 46% of the approximately €1 billion allocated to it. Mr. Murphy expressed his confidence that Cyprus will complete the absorption of funds and expects that during the Cypriot Presidency, the files will be handed over in an advanced stage. The MFF discussed concerns the EU budget for the period 2028-2034, which amounts to approximately €2 trillion. The goal is to complete negotiations and reach an agreement between member states within the next six months, so that the new MFF meets the needs and priorities of the EU.
