President of Cyprus Calls for EU De-escalation Initiative

The President of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, in an interview with the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera, stated that the European Union should promote a de-escalation initiative in the region, in cooperation with other interested partners. He emphasized that countries in the region are expecting a message from the EU. President Christodoulides stated that Cyprus remains safe and is not on the front line of the crisis, but the reaction of European countries after the recent incident was positive. He expressed his gratitude for the immediate response of countries such as Greece, France, Italy, Spain and the Netherlands. Regarding Article 42.7 of the EU Treaty on mutual defense assistance, President Christodoulides noted that it was not activated, but the reaction of the countries gave substantial meaning to the article. He stressed the need for the EU to be ready to react immediately if the article is activated by a member state. He expressed particular gratitude to Italy for its immediate response and emphasized that Cyprus, as a member of the EU and part of the wider Middle East, supports increased EU activity in the region.
