President of Cyprus at EP: European Integration Linked to End of Occupation

The President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, presented the priorities of the Cypriot Presidency of the Council of the EU to the European Parliament, emphasizing that European integration is inextricably linked to the end of occupation and the reunification of Cyprus, based on relevant UN resolutions for a bi-zonal, bi-communal federation. He also addressed the Cyprus issue, migration, the Middle East, the Multiannual Financial Framework, Schengen, and enlargement. The President stressed the need for unity among member states in addressing migration and Cyprus's desire to fully join the Schengen area. He expressed the view that the EU must be ready to respond to the obligations of candidate countries for enlargement and underlined the importance of respecting territorial integrity and sovereignty, citing the examples of Ukraine and Greenland.
