President of Cyprus Aims to Substantially Increase Low Pensions

The President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, met with representatives of the SEK, PEO, and DEOK trade unions at the Presidential Palace. During the meeting, the President emphasized the importance of pension reform and committed to increasing pensions, with a particular focus on low-income pensioners. He acknowledged the contribution of the trade unions to the country's development and expressed his desire for collaboration. The President proposed adding pension reform to the agenda, as he believes it is one of the most important issues for 2026. The goal of the reform is to address the challenges of the pension system and improve the financial situation of pensioners. Discussions with the trade unions will focus on four existing issues, as well as the proposed pension reform. The government aims to complete all necessary procedures, including approval by the House of Representatives, by 2026. The President reiterated his commitment to a substantial increase in pensions, with an emphasis on low-income pensioners, noting that this is a significant reform that has not been implemented since 1980.
