President Highlights Book's Contribution to Cyprus Issue Literature

The President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, stated that Yannis Kareklas' new book, titled "Cyprus 1830-1974: A Road to Ruin," is a significant addition to the literature on the Cyprus issue. During the book presentation, the President emphasized Kareklas' deep knowledge and long experience on the subject, as well as the value of the primary testimonies included in the volume. He characterized the book as an encyclopedia of the history of Cyprus, examining the geopolitical parameters from the 18th century to the present day. President Christodoulides expressed his appreciation for the presence of representatives from various political and social organizations at the presentation, highlighting the recognition of the author's work. He pointed out that the disappointment apparent from the book's title should not overshadow the need for an objective assessment of history, taking into account the conditions and international developments. Specifically, the President mentioned that Kareklas' study includes important testimonies from key figures in Cyprus, Greece, and abroad, as well as from historians and journalists. These testimonies offer a comprehensive picture of the history of Cyprus, from the first references to the issue in the international community to modern developments. Nikos Christodoulides concluded by emphasizing the need not to underestimate international power dynamics and to recognize that the international system often operates on the basis of the law of force rather than the rule of law. He expressed hope that the book will be a useful tool for those who wish to be informed objectively about the Cyprus issue.
