Politico: Allies Worry About Cyprus EU Presidency

NATO and EU diplomats are expressing concern about Cyprus's upcoming presidency of the Council of the EU in January 2026. The concern stems from the long-standing tensions between Cyprus and Turkey, as well as Cyprus's opposition to closer military cooperation between the EU and Ankara. Senior EU officials fear that Cyprus will influence Europe's defense priorities due to its hostility towards Turkey. Cyprus opposes Turkey's inclusion in the SAFE program and the broader integration of EU-NATO cooperation. President Christodoulides stated that Cyprus seeks to persuade Turkey to accept Cyprus's inclusion in the “Partnership for Peace” program as a first step towards NATO membership, and then to promote a gradual approach to EU-Turkey relations. The EU presidency rotates every six months and involves the promotion of important defense issues.
