Police Under Pressure as Crime Rises in Cyprus

Published January 15, 2026, 10:35

The Cyprus Police are under pressure due to the increase in crime, with 85 arson cases and 17 bombings recorded in the past year. Despite the intensification of checks, the operational readiness of the front line has been weakened, as 80% of the personnel stationed there consists of trainee police officers. This has led to delays in case management and the detention of suspects, resulting in orders to stop arrests due to lack of space in holding cells. The transfer of suspects from one end of the island to the other is a frequent occurrence. Despite the increased police presence, crime remains at high levels. Staff shortages and lack of experience are significant problems. The situation has also raised concerns about the safety of foreign entrepreneurs, who are under guard.
