Police Chief Addresses Working Hours at Parliamentary Committee

The Chief of Police, Themistocles Arnautis, appeared before the Parliamentary Legal Committee today to discuss the harmonization of the Police's working hours with those of the Public Service. The Chief emphasized that the modernization of the Police is not aimed against its officers, but rather has been a long-standing request of the members of the Force themselves. The harmonization of working hours was already decided in 2019, with a decision of the Council of Ministers and approval by the Parliament, which provided for a gradual reduction of the weekly working hours from 40 to 37.5 hours. However, the implementation of the decision was fragmented and unequal, creating problems in operational cohesion and injustices among personnel. The Chief of Police stated that the delay in implementation was due to the choices of his predecessors, despite the existence of institutional approval. As part of the modernization and reorganization of the Police, studies have been conducted by independent experts on human resources and operational issues. The discussion in the Committee focused on the need for rational resource management and ensuring the smooth functioning of the Police, taking into account operational needs and the needs of personnel. The Chief pledged transparency and accountability in the implementation of the changes.
