Poland Plans to Ban Social Media for Children Under 15

Poland is planning to ban the use of social media for children under 15, following the example of other European countries like Greece. Education Minister Barbara Nowacka stated that the government will present a draft law imposing fines on platforms that fail to ensure users are over 15 years old. This move is justified by concerns about children's mental health and a decline in their cognitive abilities, linked to social media use. Poland is not the only country considering such restrictions. Denmark, France, Spain, the UK, and Greece are also examining similar measures as claims increase that social media is harmful and addictive to minors. The UK announced in January that it is considering restrictions following the implementation of similar laws in Australia. The new legislation is expected to create conflict with major American tech companies, such as Meta and X, which have already expressed opposition to similar restrictions, as seen in the case of Australia. The law, if approved, could be implemented by early 2027. The exact amount of fines that will be imposed on non-compliant platforms is still under discussion.
