Poacher Who Threatened Gamekeepers Released: 'We'll Mourn Lives' Warns Union

A poacher who threatened gamekeepers during a check in Paphos was released by a judge's decision, causing outrage and concern within the Pan-Cypriot Trade Union ISOTITA. The incident occurred on January 9th, when the gamekeepers discovered the suspect shooting a wild bird. During the check, the poacher turned his gun on the gamekeepers and threatened them. The 66-year-old was arrested and found in possession of 18 freshly killed songbirds, as well as ammunition. ISOTITA condemns the judge's decision not to order the temporary detention of the poacher, expressing fears for the safety of gamekeepers. They point out that gamekeepers often face armed poachers while performing their duties and request to be granted gun licenses and self-protection equipment. The union calls on the Presidential Palace to intervene immediately to ensure the safety of gamekeepers and prevent future victims. They believe that tolerance towards poaching and criminals has reached its limit. The incident highlights the risk faced by gamekeepers while performing their duties and the need for increased protection from the state.
