Plan to Relocate Bus Station from Solomou Square – Considering the 'Qatar Fillet' Site

There are considerations to relocate the central bus station from Solomou Square to a state-owned plot near the former 'Hilton' hotel in Nicosia, known as the 'Qatar fillet'. This proposal is supported by the Mayor of Nicosia, Charalambos Prountzos, and had been previously suggested by a state agency. The aim is to relieve congestion in Solomou Square and improve traffic flow in the city center. The initial proposal involved creating a transfer station, where buses from other cities would stop and passengers would be transported to the center by smaller buses. However, the company managing the urban transport had expressed fears of losing customers. The new idea is a complete relocation of the bus station, raising questions about its consistency with policies to strengthen public transport. The ETΕK (Scientific and Technical Chamber of Cyprus) supports the renovation of the area and the removal of buses from Solomou Square, proposing measures such as creating more green space, improving urban furniture, and unifying schedules. The implementation of the project is expected to contribute to the development of the historical center and attract visitors.
