Phytiris Meets Mathiati Community Council Regarding New Prisons

The Minister of Justice and Public Order, Kostas Phytiris, met with the Mathiati Community Council to discuss the decision to build the new Central Prisons in the area. The Minister outlined the Government's rationale, emphasizing the need for a modern correctional facility outside the urban area, meeting the requirements of security, functionality and human rights. Furthermore, the Minister explained that the project is expected to act as a development lever for the wider region, with infrastructure upgrades, the creation of new economic activities and employment opportunities for residents. The operation of the complex will increase mobility in the area, strengthening local entrepreneurship and services. During the session, members of the Community Council had the opportunity to ask questions and record their initial views. It was agreed to present a detailed master plan of the project to the community, so that a complete picture is given and the possibility of formulating positions and suggestions is provided. The Minister reiterated that the State is proceeding with transparency, dialogue and respect for local communities, with the aim of implementing a project that is a significant investment for the state and the safety of citizens.
