Philippines: Tragedy as Landslide Hits Landfill, One Dead, Six Injured, Many Trapped

A tragedy struck Cebu, Philippines on Thursday, January 8th, when a landslide at a landfill in Barangay Binaliw claimed the life of one person, injured six others, and left dozens trapped under the rubble. Authorities are in continuous mobilization, with search and rescue operations ongoing. The incident was confirmed by Cebu City Councilor Dave Tumulak, who posted a message in the evening. He stated that the authorities were informed by telephone by a person named Philip Fernandez, who reported that many people were trapped after the landslide. According to initial reports, at least 28 people were found under the debris. Police and firefighters rescued eight people, but a woman died on the way to the hospital. Search and rescue operation underway Mayor Nestor Archival of Cebu City announced the immediate deployment of disaster response teams for search, rescue and ensuring the safety of residents. "I am closely monitoring the situation and will personally go to the Binaliw landfill as soon as possible to check the situation on the spot and coordinate the next steps," he said in a statement. Continuous rainfall the cause of the landslide According to a report by SunStar Cebu, Councilor Joel Garganera attributed the landslide to continuous and prolonged rainfall, which had softened the landfill's soil. As he stated, the accumulation of waste combined with the saturation of the soil with water made the collapse inevitable. Damage to recycling facilities The landslide also hit a recovery facility managed by Prime Integrated Waste Solutions Incorporated, a subsidiary of Prime Infrastructure Capital Incorporated, according to the same information. The authorities continue to search for any other trapped people, while fears are expressed that the number of victims may increase.
