People Alone…in the School Crowd

The increase in school violence and delinquent behavior among adolescents in Cypriot schools is a phenomenon that requires attention. A recent incident in Paphos, where two female high school students were injured in a fight, highlights the need for a collective approach to the problem by students, parents, and teachers. A nationwide survey conducted 15 years ago showed that a positive school climate reduces rates of violence. A significant finding of the research was that many students consider punishments unfair, while teachers feel a lack of respect from students. Lack of communication and isolation between students and teachers exacerbate the problem, while the spread of false news and toxicity on social media contribute to the distortion of public discourse and the reinforcement of violence.
