Patients Find Their Advocate: The Creation of a Complex Mechanism

After years of campaigning by the organized patient movement, Cyprus is preparing to have a Patient Advocate in 2025. The new institution, which was passed in April and will see the first Advocate appointed in October, aims to effectively protect patient rights and fill a long-standing gap in the healthcare system. Marios Charalambides, the first Patient Advocate, explains that his role is to act as a guardian and mediator, resolving problems, preventing conflicts and pushing for improvements. The institution includes a complex mechanism for recording, investigating and managing complaints, as well as educating and informing patients about their rights. The creation of this mechanism is a huge undertaking, given that it will cover more than 7,000 healthcare providers.
