Path Opens for Affordable Banking Services for Small Businesses

The Cypriot Parliament has approved legislation to facilitate access for very small businesses and self-employed individuals to cheaper banking services, following an initiative by AKEL. The new draft laws protect small businesses with rights similar to those of consumers and remove restrictions on opening payment accounts. In addition, rules of transparency and comparability are introduced for bank fees, changing accounts is facilitated, and procedures for opening basic feature accounts are simplified. This legislation is expected to provide substantial relief to small businesses and enhance their competitiveness.
