Parliamentary Committee Expresses Satisfaction with TEPAK Expansion and New Student Housing

The Parliamentary Committee on Education expressed its satisfaction with the planned launch of the School of Marine Sciences and Sustainable Development of the Technological University of Cyprus (TEPAK) in Larnaca in September 2027, as well as the 500 new student beds that will be available by 2027. MPs from the DISY party, such as Giorgos Karoullas and Prodromos Alambritis, welcomed the expansion of TEPAK and the new study programs, emphasizing their contribution to addressing the housing problem of students. Mr. Karoullas proposed incentives for students to co-habit, while Mr. Alambritis expressed his satisfaction with the implementation of a long-standing request of Larnaca. Furthermore, the possibility of establishing a new TEPAK school in Famagusta was discussed, with emphasis on the need for strategic investment in education and regional development. Mr. Karoullas stressed the need for realistic planning and academic orientation in such an effort. The Committee also examined the budget of TEPAK and the funding of buildings and personnel for the new school in Larnaca. Regarding the effort to establish departments of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens in Larnaca (Psychology and Maritime Studies), doubts were expressed about meeting the schedule for their operation in September 2026, mainly due to difficulties in finding suitable premises. However, it was assured that efforts are being made to solve the housing issue. Finally, the DISY MP Andreas Apostolou expressed his support for the efforts of the Municipality of Athienou for the establishment of a Veterinary School of the University of Thessaly in the municipality of Athienou, while at the same time, the suggestion of the Minister of Education is expected on the matter.
