Paphos CCI: International Uncertainties and Geopolitical Developments Affect Investment Climate

The President of the Paphos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCI), Giorgos Mayis, stated that the growth rates in Cyprus are not immediately reflected in the lower income brackets, due to structural problems of the state that require regulation or reform. Despite the excellent performance of tourism and related services in Paphos, housing remains inaccessible to a large portion of the population. Mr. Mayis emphasized the need for more effective and faster measures for affordable housing, as well as the role of banks in creating more flexible housing schemes with better terms, given the difficulty of acquiring housing with current interest rates. He acknowledged the significant investments in sectors such as technology, energy and transport, which contribute to development. However, he expressed concern about international uncertainties arising from geopolitical developments in Ukraine, the Middle East and the wider region. In addition, he mentioned the inflated government spending, such as the state payroll and administrative costs, as factors affecting the investment climate. Mr. Mayis stressed that solving these structural problems is essential to ensure that the benefits of development reach all citizens and to create a more sustainable and equitable economic environment.
