Pakistan PM Speaks with Iranian President, Seeks Peacemaking Role

Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced on Monday that he spoke with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and pledged that Islamabad would help to promote peace in the region. The two leaders have spoken several times this month, mainly to exchange greetings on the occasion of Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr. Sharif also said he sent his greetings to Pezeshkian on the occasion of the Persian New Year, on Friday. The two leaders discussed "the serious situation in the Gulf region and agreed that there is an urgent need for de-escalation, dialogue and diplomacy". In a post on the X platform, Sharif stressed that Pakistan is committed to playing "a constructive role in promoting peace in the region". Pakistan, which is currently in open conflict with neighboring Afghanistan, also borders Iran and has been seeking a diplomatic solution to the crisis since the beginning of the war. As it relies heavily on oil and gas from the Gulf countries, it concluded a mutual defense support agreement with Saudi Arabia in 2025, which stipulates that if either country is attacked, it will be considered an attack against both. Sharif and Army Chief General Asim Munir went to Riyadh this month and met with the de facto leader of Saudi Arabia, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. At the same time, the Pakistani government condemned the assassination of the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, an event that sparked violent protests in Pakistan near US diplomatic missions. It then congratulated his son, Mojtaba, who took over as the new Supreme Leader of the country in his father's place.
