Loss of Biodiversity Drives Mosquitoes to Target Humans

A new study suggests that the loss of biodiversity may lead to an increase in mosquito attacks on humans. Deprived of their variety of natural hosts, mosquitoes are turning to humans as a food source. The research, conducted in the Atlantic Forest, showed that mosquitoes prefer to feed on human blood, increasing the risk of transmitting diseases such as dengue fever, Zika virus, and chikungunya. Researchers used DNA sequencing to analyze the blood consumed by the mosquitoes, confirming their preference for human hosts. The study highlights the need to protect biodiversity to limit the spread of mosquito-borne diseases.
