Outrage Over Faidon Case: Complaints Filed in 2022, But Action Delayed

The case of the Mayor of Paphos, Faidon Faidon, reveals a systematic indifference and procrastination of the competent authorities. Complaints of irregularities in the Municipality of Paphos had been submitted to the Police as early as 2022, but remained in the drawers of the Legal Service without any criminal proceedings being initiated. The complaints concerned the arbitrary subletting of Turkish Cypriot property, hirings without approval, illegal use of official vehicles, and misappropriation of municipal funds. Despite investigations by the Audit Office, there was no reaction until the recent revelations. The delay in addressing the complaints and the lack of transparency raise reasonable suspicions of an attempt at cover-up. The case highlights the need to strengthen the audit mechanisms and their independence, as well as to address allegations of corruption promptly. The recent mobilization of the Ministry of Interior and the commencement of audits are considered belated and are not sufficient to restore public trust.
