Olgün: Efforts to Rebuild Trust Continue

The Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary-General, Maria Angela Olgün, stated that the leaders of the two communities in Cyprus will continue their efforts to reach agreements on confidence-building initiatives and the commencement of substantial negotiations. The statement followed a two-hour meeting between Ms. Olgün, the President of the Republic Nikos Christodoulides, and the Turkish Cypriot leader Erhurman, at the residence of the UN Secretary-General's Special Representative in Nicosia. According to Ms. Olgün, the two leaders shared their proposals for charting a path towards meaningful negotiations. They also reviewed the progress made on the confidence-building initiatives that have been put forward. Ms. Olgün emphasized the importance of direct dialogue for expressing views and concerns, as the process is in a pre-negotiation phase. The meeting was held at the invitation of Ms. Olgün, who underscored the need for continuous and direct dialogue between the two leaders. Ms. Olgün's statement reflects the continued efforts of the United Nations to resolve the Cyprus issue and restart negotiations. Despite the challenges, Ms. Olgün expressed hope that the two leaders will be able to agree on specific confidence-building initiatives, which will create a more positive climate for the start of substantial negotiations. The success of these efforts will depend on the political will of both sides.
