Olguin Arrives in Cyprus for 'Intentions Test' of the Two Leaders

The UN Special Envoy, Maria Angela Olguin, is arriving in Cyprus to meet with the negotiators of the two communities and their leaders, Nikos Christodoulides and Tufan Erhurman. Her goal is to ascertain their intentions ahead of an informal trilateral meeting and to find common ground for the resumption of substantial talks from where they left off in Crans Montana. Olguin is seeking commitments to avoid restarting negotiations from scratch and to address the remaining impasses. At the same time, she is seeking similar commitments from the guarantor powers, Greece and Turkey. Both leaders have expressed their readiness for the meeting, but the substance will be judged by their actions. Erhurman emphasized the seriousness of the effort for a solution, while Christodoulides announced his intention to announce new unilateral measures.
