Olgin: Active Public Participation is Crucial for Progress

The Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary-General for Cyprus, Maria Angela Holguin, emphasizes that active public participation is crucial for progress in the Cyprus issue. According to an article by her, the efforts of the leaders are not enough without the support of the citizens and a new model of cooperation between the two communities is required. Ms. Holguin states that the meetings between President Christodoulides and Tufan Erhurmhan since November 2025 can contribute positively in this direction. She has hosted meetings between representatives of civil society from both communities, with the aim of strengthening reconciliation. Particular emphasis is placed on the workshop of the Technical Committee on Youth in Amman, where young people expressed their vision for the future of Cyprus, as well as a seminar in Paphos with academics from both communities. In addition, she mentions the meeting of the Co-Chairs of the 13 Technical Committees at Wilton Park, where ways to strengthen trust and the effectiveness of the Committees were discussed. Ms. Holguin expressed her satisfaction with the commitment of the Committee members to building bridges between the two communities and announced that she will continue to organize similar meetings, with the aim of strengthening cooperation and promoting positive change through collective effort. The peace process must be collective and include all citizens.
