Grain Producers Call for Consideration of Closing Checkpoints as a 'Drastic' Measure for Foot-and-Mouth Disease

The Pan-Cypriot Grain Producers Organization expressed its concern regarding the spread of foot-and-mouth disease and called on the state to consider closing the checkpoints from and to the occupied territories as a drastic measure to combat the disease. It also requests the intensification of controls along the ceasefire line. The Organization expresses its solidarity with all livestock farmers who are suffering from the epidemic and believes that the measures taken are in the right direction, however, it calls for their immediate implementation. In addition, it requests the provision of psychological and financial support to farmers who have suffered losses, so that they can recover. The Grain Producers recognize the importance of livestock farming for the agricultural economy and emphasize that the consequences of the disease affect the entire agricultural community. They express the hope that the competent authorities will move quickly and effectively to limit the spread of the disease. Finally, the Organization assures that the agricultural family of Cyprus remains united and will face the challenge with cooperation, responsibility and solidarity.
