North Korea Launches Missiles Amid US Military Role Talks

North Korea launched multiple ballistic missiles towards the sea on Tuesday, according to South Korea and Japan. The missiles were fired from an area near the capital Pyongyang and traveled approximately 350 kilometers, reaching a maximum altitude of 80 kilometers. Japan stated that the missiles would not affect the country, while South Korea condemned the launches as provocative and a violation of UN resolutions. Pyongyang has increased missile test launches in recent months, justifying them as part of its tactical nuclear arsenal for self-defense. Furthermore, there is increased interest in North Korea's short-range missiles, as they are alleged to have supplied them to Russia for use in the war in Ukraine. The launches occurred while a senior US Department of Defense official was in South Korea for talks regarding the modernization of the military alliance between the two countries.
