Published January 21, 2026, 08:30

Nicosia is evaluating Donald Trump's invitation to join the new 'Peace Council,' discussing the matter with its European partners before giving a definitive answer. Government Spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis stated that the invitation extends to other countries and EU institutions, and that the Council aims to ensure security and stability in the Middle East, with respect for international law. Nicosia considers the President of the Republic's appearance before the European Parliament to be historic, where he presented the priorities of the Cypriot Presidency and the approach to the challenges facing the EU. Letymbiotis emphasized the role of the EU as a bridge of communication with its traditional partners and allies, as the challenges facing the Presidency are geopolitical and increasing in complexity. He pointed out that Cyprus, like Greece, will follow an approach based on its principles and values, as it did on the issues of Ukraine, Denmark, and Greenland, with respect for territorial integrity and sovereignty. The government awaits the evaluation of the invitation by the EU and the Republic of Cyprus, as well as the extraordinary European Council scheduled for Thursday. Letymbiotis stressed the need for EU cohesion and speed of response to developments. Regarding the different approaches of Cyprus and Greece, the Spokesman clarified that no decision has been made yet and that Nicosia will take an official position after evaluating the invitation, just as the Greek government did. He emphasized the importance of cohesion and composure in these times.
