New Prison Complex to be Built in Mathiatis

The new prison complex will be built in Mathiatis, on an area of 1,300,000 sq.m., at a cost of €300 million and will have 1500 beds. Its construction is a priority for the government, aiming to address overcrowding and upgrade detention conditions in prisons. At the same time, procedures are underway to recruit 90 prison guards and select a new Director of the Central Prisons, for which 37 applications have been submitted. The discussion on the issue took place in the Parliamentary Committee on Human Rights, where the critical situation in the Central Prisons was highlighted. Members of the Committee described the Central Prisons as a “crime headquarters” and stressed the need for immediate improvement of detention conditions and strengthening of staff. The Minister of Justice acknowledged the problems and committed to implementing the necessary changes. The lack of staff and the old facilities are the main problems of the Central Prisons. The construction of the new prison complex and the improvement of detention conditions are a priority for the government, aiming to restore the dignity of prisoners and enhance security.
