New Disputes Arise Over Nursing Staff – Bill Returns to Health Ministry for Further Consultation

Discussions regarding amendments to legislation concerning the recruitment of nurses have reached an impasse, leading the parliamentary health committee to postpone the debate and return the bill to the Ministry of Health for further consultation. Nursing representative bodies have expressed strong disagreements with the proposed changes. The amendments aim to remove restrictions on the employment of nurses from third countries, provided they hold a certificate of knowledge of the Greek language. However, nurses fear that the introduction of nurses from third countries without guaranteed residence and work permits could lead to exploitation and turn Cyprus into a transit station for nurses seeking better working conditions in Europe. Furthermore, concerns have been raised that the introduction of nurses from third countries will discourage enrollment in nursing departments at Cypriot universities. Nurses argue that the real solution to the staffing shortage is to improve working conditions and strengthen education. The Pan-Cypriot Nurses' Union believes that the amendment to the legislation aims to find cheaper nursing staff from third countries, rather than genuinely addressing the shortage.
