New Central Prison Plans, Mobile Phone Jamming System Deemed a Failure

Published January 2, 2026, 21:08

Justice Minister Konstantinos Fytiris is pushing for the relocation of the Central Prisons, a proposal previously rejected by his predecessors. Measures to improve the prison system are expected to be announced soon. It was revealed that the prison's mobile phone jamming system, despite initial announcements, never functioned and was ultimately destroyed by inmates. The Minister pledged changes to protocols, staff interchangeability, and the hiring of specialized personnel. Simultaneously, a new round of approximately 130 prisoner releases, mostly Syrians, is expected due to prison overcrowding.
