New Cases of Foot-and-Mouth Disease Detected in Geri and Dali

Two new cases of foot-and-mouth disease have been detected on farms in Geri and Dali, in the province of Nicosia, bringing the total number of cases to 41. The cases were detected in a cattle farm with 70 cows in Geri and a sheep and goat farm with approximately 1700 animals in Dali. According to the Veterinary Services, the new cases are due to previous movements of infected animals. All animals from 16 infected units have already been culled. Vaccinations have been carried out on more than 76% of cattle and more than 42% of sheep and goats across Cyprus. In addition, a vaccine for pigs has been ordered and is being produced, which is expected to arrive in Cyprus within March or early April. Authorities emphasize the importance of prevention and control measures to limit the spread of the disease.
