Need for Cybersecurity Education in Schools Discussed in Parliament

The importance of cybersecurity education in schools and the need for a national strategy on the issue were discussed at the House Education Committee. MP Savvia Orphanidou emphasized the importance of digital literacy from a young age due to risks such as addiction, bullying, and sexual harassment. A proposal was made to include a cybersecurity course in the school curriculum. Representatives from the Police (Cybercrime Subdivision) stated that prevention is crucial and that 117 reports of cyberbullying were recorded in 2025. Representatives from the Deputy Ministry of Research and Innovation and the Digital Security Authority highlighted the need for continuous education and the difficulty of changing culture without integrating cybersecurity into the school curriculum. The Ministry of Education stated that the issue is part of broader policies and promotes the responsible use of technology and critical thinking. Organizations such as Women4Cyber Cyprus and the Cyprus Safe Internet Center offer awareness programs.
