Nearly Half of Businesses and 33% of Citizens Suffered Cyberattacks

Two island-wide surveys conducted by the Office of the Communications Commissioner – Digital Security Authority reveal that nearly half of businesses (53%) and 33% of citizens have experienced cyberattacks in the last 12 months. In businesses, the most common form of attack is phishing (44%), while no specific percentage is provided for citizens in this summary. Businesses that were attacked incurred financial costs in more than half of cases (51%) with an average of €12,000. There is a slight decrease in financial damage compared to 2024. Lack of information about cybersecurity seminars (43% unaware) and delays in updating cybersecurity policies (25% haven’t revised in over a year) are significant problems. A worrying fact is that 48% of businesses that were not attacked believe this is because they are not a target, an increase compared to previous surveys. This suggests an underestimation of the risk, as any business can become a target. For citizens, the percentage of attacks has decreased compared to previous years, but remains significant (33%). They received an average of 25.9 attacks per year. The survey highlights the need to strengthen digital security at both business and individual level.
