Nearly 2 Million Casualties in Russia and Ukraine Armies – What New Research Shows

A new study by the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) estimates that the war in Ukraine has resulted in nearly two million casualties on both sides, including dead, wounded, and missing. According to the analysis, Russia has suffered the heaviest losses, with 325,000 dead out of a total of 1.2 million casualties. Ukrainian losses are estimated at 600,000 casualties, including 100,000 to 140,000 dead. CSIS predicts that the total number of casualties could reach 2 million in the spring of 2026. Simultaneously, the number of civilian casualties continues to rise, with the UN reporting nearly 15,000 deaths and 40,600 injuries since the start of the war.
