Largest inflow in 6 years – The rains that fell over the three days in numbers

The recent rains have been particularly beneficial for Cyprus's water reserves, with an inflow of 12.3 million cubic meters into the dams over the last three days, the largest three-day inflow since January 2020. Dam capacity on March 23rd reached 26.9%, exceeding the same day last year (24.7%). Total inflow since the beginning of the hydrological year reached 59.8 million cubic meters, constituting the fourth-best performance of the decade. Despite the significant improvement, reserves remain below 1/3 of the total dam capacity and water security has not been created. The Water Development Department (WDD) remains cautious, as the goal is to ensure water adequacy for the coming years as well. Rainfall until the end of April is crucial for assessing the situation. WDD official, Gianna Economidou, emphasized the need for conscious water conservation by citizens and the continuation of projects by the Water Boards (WBs) to reduce losses in the networks. Regarding the water lost from overflowing dams, she clarified that it replenishes the underground aquifers. Rainfall in March reached 149% of the normal, which contributed significantly to the increase in reserves. However, the situation remains critical and requires continuous monitoring and responsible management of water resources.
