Mytilene: Total Lockdown on Livestock Products Due to Foot-and-Mouth Disease

A total lockdown is being imposed on livestock products from Lesvos due to the outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease in a cattle unit in the Pelopi area. The measure, which applies retroactively to products that have left the island after January 15, has serious consequences for the local economy, as livestock farming is a key pillar of it. More than 70,000 sheep and goats intended for export remain unsold, while milk collection from livestock farms has stopped. The Ministry of Rural Development has delineated a protection zone, a surveillance zone and a prohibited zone on the island, valid until May 15, 2026. The movement of live animals is prohibited, as is the distribution of raw milk and dairy products outside of Lesvos. Milk can only be processed within the island, with strict adherence to biosecurity measures. In addition, dairy products produced in the rest of Greece from Lesvos raw milk are not available on the market. The situation has caused concern among livestock farmers, who are facing significant economic losses. The Ministry of Rural Development has activated the Local Foot-and-Mouth Disease Control Centers to coordinate the competent services and inform the public in a timely manner. The measure has been taken to prevent the spread of the zoonotic disease and protect the livestock production of Lesvos. The competent authorities are closely monitoring the situation and will take further measures, if necessary.
